How Does Grid’s OCR
Meter Reading Work?
Grid unifies customer, meter, and billing data in one place, guides the field technician through a structured capture workflow, and then applies layered validations before releasing readings into your billing cycle.

1. Field Visit & Customer Verification
Using the Grid Frontline app, the meter reader sees synchronized customer, asset, AMI, and billing details: consumer number, meter make/model, serial number, last reading, and location. This ensures they are at the correct premises and reading the right device.
2. Pre-Capture Checks
The app guides the reader to confirm:
- The meter is powered and functional
- The display is visible and readable
- The correct parameters (kWh, kW, kVAh, MD, etc.) are selected for capture
Only then does the app move to the camera interface.
3. Image Capture & OCR Analysis
The reader captures the meter display. Grid’s OCR engine instantly processes the image and extracts reading values, meter identifiers, and key labels. Burst-mode frames can be used for higher accuracy through multi-frame cross-checking.
4. Multi-Layer Validation & Flagging
Grid applies anti-fraud, anti-error, geo-spatial, and operational validations in one pipeline, flagging any suspicious or inconsistent readings for review instead of letting them silently pass into billing.
5. Sync to Billing & Analytics
Once validated, readings sync back to Grid’s unified data layer and onward to AMI/MDM and billing systems. Dashboards update in real time, and workflows in Grid Ops or your WFM system can be triggered for exceptions and field follow-ups.
